Report Finds Majority Favor Mayoral Control Of Schools
A new report, spearheaded by the city's public advocate, says says the mayor should maintain control of the city school system.
A commission met with parents, experts and public officials through a variety of forums over the past year to collect feedback on the mayor's control of the city school system.
Feedback revealed that the majority prefer having one elected official in charge of the city's education instead of the former arrangement where the responsibility and power was dispersed.
The panel recommends more parental input, saying parents and communities are frustrated by the lack of channels to express concerns.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel Klein have repeatedly called on legislators to renew the 2002 law, which expires in June.
They say the takeover has led to higher test scores, reduced violence and other reforms in city schools.
