Chelsea Theater Puts Spotlight On Dance
Parsons Dance is bringing its high-flying, dazzling moves to Chelsea’s Joyce Theater for a two-week run. NY1’s Arts reporter Stephanie Simon filed the following report.Choreographer David Parsons does not shine the spotlight on his graceful athletic dancers. He lets the dancers do it themselves.
“I was thinking about how if we could just move the lights around the dancer we could get some incredible silhouettes from different angles and it would really give it the feel of a jazz. It was the inspiration of a jazz bar, kind of down and dirty,” says Parsons.
Light is Parsons’s muse, and when the lights blink on and off, he allows his dancers to fly. In a piece called “Caught,” the dancer appears to levitate.
“We have all dreamed of flying, so this is what you get to do in front of a live audience and the reaction from the audience is fantastic,” says Parsons.
Parsons Dance has a two-week engagement at the Joyce Theater also includes “My Sweet Lord,” a tribute to George Harrison.
“We couldn't use the music for a long time, but Olivia Harrison gave us the rights to do it here, so we brought it back,” says Parsons. “It used to be with the whole [American Ballet Theatre] with like 25 or so dancers, and here it's like 10, but it’s beautiful and I love it. It's like George Harrison, who for me was constantly on a spiritual journey.”
During its run at the Joyce Theater, Parsons Dance is also unveiling a brand new collaboration with the East Village Opera Company, which takes classic opera tunes and sets them to a rock and roll beat. The two lead singers will perform live with Parsons Dancers in a new evening-length piece called "Remember me."
“That is one of the most beautiful things for me, to have singers right next to dancers and have all of it come together as a whole,” says Parsons.
Parsons Dance is now at the Joyce Theater until January 18. Tickets start at just $19. For more information, visit www.joyce.org, www.parsonsdance.org, or www.eastvillageoperacompany.com.
