Bergen County Band Hits High Note At Olympics

By: Samantha Liebman

A northern New Jersey rock band is hitting a high note at the Olympics, and you can hear their song whenever the Chinese Basketball team gets on the court. NY1's Samantha Lieberman filed the following report.

If you're following the Olympics, keep your ears peeled for sounds from Bergen.

Musician Jack Hsu composed a song titled "Rising of the Sun," which was picked as this year's Chinese Olympic basketball team's theme music.

Hsu is part of a band called "Hsu Nami," and the group wrote the song in 2006, never thinking it would make a worldwide debut.

"We wrote it two years ago and put it out on a record. We played at the Asian festival in Union Square and some people that work for the NBA picked it up and they asked for publishing rights and the band agreed it was OK," said musician Jack Hsu of Fort Lee.

Now the song will resonate throughout Beijing during the Olympics, and Fort Lee residents are cheering on their neighbor, as well as team USA.

"It's actually really exciting I didn't know that anything that cool happened in Fort Lee, it's a really small town," said Francesca Vasquez of Fort Lee.

"It makes me feel wonderful to know that our kids are doing so good and that this is coming out of our area, when you hear fort lee on the news and at the Olympics is so great," said Pat Boccher of Fort Lee.

"I'm feeling very proud to know that someone in fort lee actually accomplished something like that," said Joel Olivero who works in Fort Lee.

Even though the Chinese Team did not pay Hsu Nami to use the song, Hsu says he and his band mates are happy to get attention, and be part of Olympic history.
