Police Recover Eight Stolen Torahs, Arrest Suspects
Eight torahs stolen from a Jewish Center in Queens last month have been found and two suspects have been arrested in connection with their theft.
Police say Eric Giraldo and Alan Lozano are charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.
"Eric was a good employee. I personally liked him and so to me it was really a devastating blow. I was sort of his patron and I trusted him with a lot of things," said center Honorary President Alan Gerard.
According to the Queens district attorney, Giraldo, a custodian at the Jewish Center of Kew Gardens Hills, allegedly stole the scrolls, and Lozano allegedly held them at his home.
They could each face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
Rabbis discovered the torahs were missing before a service last month.
The items are valued at more than $400,000.
Gerard says the Torahs will be returned to the Jewish Center in 1 to 2 weeks. Just in time to celebrate their high holy days.
