Gas Odor Forces Evacuation Of Bronx School
Some Bronx residents have been allowed back into their homes as officials determine the source of a major gas leak Wednesday which led to the evacuation of an elementary school.
Fire officials said they responded to reports of a gas odor in Morris Heights around 9 a.m.
They soon cleared out PS 204 and eight surrounding buildings.
"I was scared, you know? If they came at 9 o'clock in the morning and this is two hours later, you don't know how long the gas was there for, and I can smell it, and you just, you're scared. You don't wanna get blown up," said one displaced resident.
"Well actually, when you see anything with gas, you fear for your life," said another resident.
Those forced from their homes were put onto buses to get them out of the cold.
Several blocks were also closed off as a precaution.
